This work continues Jason Jowett’s signature layered fabric style, first developed as a way of navigating depression and self-reflection. Hand-painted linen is cut, layered, and sewn together to create depth and movement, embodying both vulnerability and resilience.

The subject is Ian Roberts, Australia’s first openly gay rugby league player. Through shadow, form, and texture, Jowett reflects on both Roberts’ bravery in coming out during a hostile era, and the lasting physical and emotional toll of professional sport. The layered fabrics capture the dualities of strength and fragility, visibility and vulnerability, making the work both a tribute and a meditation on endurance.

Care Instructions

Layered Fabric Art

Over time, fabric may collect dust. To remove, use a lint roller slowly and gently, rolling downwards with the grain of the fabric. Avoid pulling against the fabric layers.

Timber Stain Frame

For frames with a timber stain, gently wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or excessive moisture.

Acrylic on Board

To clean, lightly pat the surface with a soft damp cloth to lift dust. Do not rub or use cleaning products.

Sunlight

Display artworks away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can cause colours to fade and weaken both fabrics and timber finishes over time.

Climate & Environment

Keep artworks in stable conditions, away from damp walls, heaters, or air conditioners. Excess humidity can damage fabrics and timber, while extreme dryness or heat may cause warping or cracking. Always handle with clean hands and take care when reframing or rehanging.
