Jason Jowett is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Sydney, working across painting, textiles, and sculpture. His practice explores queer identity, emotional recovery, and the intimate spaces we create to find comfort and connection.
Originally trained as a dancer and now a senior interior designer at Richards Stanisich, Jowett draws on personal experience to inform his work. His debut solo exhibition, Detached, examined depression and intimacy through layered fabric compositions inspired by encounters on queer dating apps. The show sold out on opening night and received strong emotional responses from audiences.
His latest collection, Hung, marks a shift toward healing and resilience. Incorporating soft, quilted fabric forms, custom framing, and sculptural elements, each work reflects personal rituals of care while telling broader stories of queer passion, heartbreak, and recovery.
Jowett was a finalist in the Archibald Prize for his portrait of MP Alex Greenwich and continues to create original works and limited-edition print series that bring deeply personal narratives into living spaces.
